Bradley Stoke ‘Special Needs’ Judo Tournament: Saturday, 24th February 2007

Bradley Stoke leisure centre, Bristol, hosted the Bradley Stoke International ‘Special Needs’ Judo tournament. 100 plus competitors from Wales, Scotland, Washington (Tyne & Wear), High Wycombe (Stokenchurch), Hastings (Westerleigh) and Bristol (Kodachi Kwai and Bradley Stoke clubs) with one guest Dutch competitor.

Judo players arrived at the leisure centre for the 9 o’clock weigh in and divisioning to ensure individuals were in the correct pools. When this procedure and the official formalities were completed, the morning session started with players in the junior section competing in two or three matches.

The afternoon session commenced with the senior section and those judokas (practitioners) who have been competing for a number of years from their teenage years or younger are beginning to build up their strength and stamina. This is evident with some of the contests fought at a fast and furious pace with all competitors safety always paramount. Whilst some of the players fell awkwardly or winded when thrown, medical assistance was not required.

After this session and to round off the day, the organisers arranged for those competitors that were interested a two team contest with the format of the first score wins comprising approximately 36 matches. It was amazing to watch one contest going the full distance and into extra time without a score. In the end, a draw was given and one point awarded to both competitors for their efforts.

A special mention and congratulations must go to Mitchell Evans (Kodachi Kwai) who was awarded ‘The Spirit of Judo’ trophy. All competitors had an enjoyable day and all those involved with ‘Special-Needs’ judo will look forward to the next tournament.
