April 2008: Breakthrough Mentoring Project

Breakthrough Mentoring Project

Last December (2007) The Breakthrough Mentoring Project run jointly by South Gloucestershire Council Community Sport and the SG PE Association won a national award for its work supporting children, young people and families. The project has received funding from SUDS for the last 2 years and the project’s mentors support a large number of children with disabilities.

The Care Services Improvement Partnership presented the award at the Lancaster Gate Hotel in London and the project beat over 70 others put forward from across the country.

The award was seen as a great recognition of the work done by the 35 mentors who support the programme working with over 100 vulnerable children each week. The project was seen as a fantastic example of multi agency work and is now being copied in North Somerset and BANES with Bristol in discussions.

Steve Spiers from the Senior Sports Development Officer and Jon Wheeler the Project Co-ordinator both from South Gloucestershire Council Community Sport collected the award in person at the event.
