The Table Top Cricket Regional Final for 2007 was set to be the biggest event so far hosted at Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground. With 12 schools invited representing South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, BANES and North Somerset. 100 children were involved in competing for two trophies. Fosseway, Treloar, a team representing Bristol and a combined team from Brimsham Green and Culverhill schools met the classification system and played a round robin for both a place at the National Final at Lord’s in June and a trophy. Baytree, Culverhill, New Siblands, Warmley Park, Florence Brown, Claremont and Briarwiood played as many games as possible and the average score from the games was used to determine the wining team. Unfortunately the Star Centre was unable to play on the day.
With so many teams Martin Mansell from ECB / Lord Taverners organised the four teams competing for a place at the National Final. All games were officiated by umpires from the county ground looking very smart and professional in their white jackets. Following one day of training 8 students from King Edmund and Kingsfield School were keen to support at this event. On the day they showed levels of maturity well beyond their years. They worked with complete dedication frequently without breaks to assist with every team; they organised score sheets, recorded the scores of every game and generally ensured that staff were aware of when and where their next match would be. The event would not have run so smoothly without such competent students all were a credit to themselves and their schools. After fierce competition the scores were very close in both competitions and all players were thrilled to be presented with certificates and T-Shirts from professional Players. The overall winner for the Trophy on the day was New Siblands School. Treloer School won the Regional Final and will represent the South West at the National Final. Congratulations to all pupils for playing so well and showing such tremendous team spirit on the day. Many thanks to staff at the County Ground for supporting this event, the umpires for giving up their time, to all staff support, community coaches, WESPORT, Martin Mansell representing ECB / Lord Taverners, to the students from Kingsfield School and King Edmund and their teachers Mrs Bell and Mr Smith Jane Whittock SSCO |
